My success as a consultant is based on a lot of quite varied knowledge and experience, a broad skillset and a positive attitude. The attributes most in demand are:
Since going solo in 2014 a fair bit of my bread and butter work has been fundraising, resulting in nearly £2m of income for UK charities and multi agency projects. I've had success both working one to one with charity senior management to research and pitch for funding opportunities as well as working with consortiums to develop and propose major funding bids. I've also designed and delivered fundraising training for project partners.
In three years in senior management at Engineers Without Borders I had a high level of involvement with corporate donors, leading to donations totalling over £250,000. I fundraised over £200,000 for community projects at Nottingham CVS and developed supporter appeals at Skillshare International. I initiated funding advice training at One East Midlands and developed the East Midlands Funding Advice Network, enabling the non-profit sector to develop robust income generation strategies in response to changing economic and social circumstances.
Working with leaders and talented individuals
I can help you develop leadership in your organisation and support you to develop your organisational strategy or business plans. I work with chief executives and senior managers every day, building trusted working relationships, sharing ideas, developing new thinking. I have developed and facilitated various learning experiences for client teams and regularly mentor senior staff.
In employment I line managed individuals and teams in most roles over a twenty year career, recruiting and working together with both staff and volunteers. My strengths are a coaching approach, experience of managing change and the ability to inspire. I have particular skills in recruitment, deployment and remote management of volunteers.
Planning and implementing change
A big recent success was implementing major change for my client NWG Network, when we set up the National CSE Response Unit, involving a near doubling of staff, major office expansion, new IT services, high level government engagement, national PR and work with the board on risk management.
I am able to analyse strategic business and operational challenges at a deep level and motivate others to plan and carry through change in structure, culture and activities. I am confident in integrating project plans and operational plans into strategic change frameworks and working with colleagues to make change work.
Training and facilitation
I am an accomplished trainer and facilitator able to draw on a wide range of practical work experience. I trained as a trainer in the early 90’s and received facilitation training at Oxfam GB. I have devised and delivered training programmes and accompanying materials on various subjects, from management practice to community development, and I am able to adapt techniques and styles, having worked with young students, community groups, staff, older volunteers and senior stakeholders.
I am highly experienced working to develop relationships with external organisations in not-for-profit, private and public sectors in UK and internationally. I have worked with engineering firms, social enterprises and UK universities at Engineers Without Borders; with local authorities, community groups and consultants at One East Midlands; with faith groups, think tanks and international networks at Skillshare International; with disability organisations, BME groups and local radio at Nottingham CVS.
Project management and systems improvement
I trained in The Management Centre's systematic approach to project management while at Oxfam, running international conferences events, establishing new networks, developing communication services and arranging building works. At Skillshare International I benefited from comprehensive training for senior managers on system improvement. I have developed and/or delivered projects funded by grants from donors including UK government, EuropAid, Big Lottery Fund and the Learning and Skills Council.
